This was a small project taken on within a beautiful Cotswold cottage. The fireplace was thick with historical carbon deposits and some deteriorated bricks. Not to mention of course aged and failing historical lime mortar. The fireplace was initially treated with a poultice to remove superficial carbon deposits so that the new mortar would not be stained, whilst leaving enough behind to acknowledge its former life as an open fire. The joints were raked out carefully to avoid any damage to the bricks. The deteriorated bricks were repaired with a custom mixed and coloured repair mortar and the fireplace was repointed with a natural hydraulic lime 2 consisting of a high free lime content.
