Aynho lime repointing

What does lime mortar repointing entail?

General repointing specification:

  • Joints are to be raked out to a minimum of 25mm.

  • Raked joints will be cleared of any friable material.

  • Joints are to be damped before mortar is applied.

  • Cleaned joints are to be backfilled with appropriate lime mortar specifications.

  • Masonry-friendly tools would be used.

  • Mortar is to be applied and pressed into joints.

  • Applied lime mortar to be further compacted into joints then worked to a flush finish.

  • Hessian will be used when required to protect mortared joints from any adverse weather conditions.

  • Damaged stone and brickwork are to be replaced where necessary.

  • Where brick/ stone has limited damage a repair mortar can be used.

Often one of the more difficult aspects of building maintenance and repair is access. Chimneys and difficult-to-access elevations are often in poorer condition, having been ignored due to the cost and disruption of scaffolding access requirements.
